The region

HELLO!

If you’re reading this, it means you’ve chosen the region of Saja Nansa as the place to enjoy your vacation. And if you’re still on the fence about visiting, we’ll convince you by telling you all about its charms

On this website you’ll discover who are the “anjana” and the “cúlebre” and where they  live, what Purriego Zamarrones are, what Tudanca cows are like and that they have their own Olympics. You’ll also learn what an eccentric is and where to find it, what “garaúja” is as well as how to be fancy with our “corbatas” and bibs when eating “sorropotún” or montañés stew. And you’ll find out about the musical “capricho” of a genius and where the Bolao Indian is hidden.

Where is it?
The region is in western Cantabria and it’s comprised of 18 municipalities. It’s characterized by the green of its forests and meadows and the blue of its sea and rivers. In fact, the Saja and Nansa Rivers are what give the region its name. It also shapes the region, along with the lower basin of the Deva River, which borders with Asturias creating one of the most beautiful estuaries you’ll ever see: Tina Mayor

And why should you have to choose between the sea and mountains, when Saja Nansa has it all! (Or almost)? The following list will tell you everything it has to offer:

  • Mother Earth: Natural parks, beaches, coves, estuaries and cliffs, gorges, incredible lookouts, and forests of oaks, beeches, yews and even sequoias!
  • Endorphin boosters: surfing, paddle surfing, golf, speleology, canoeing, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, snowshoeing, climbing and canyoning.
  • Culture: caves, an iron foundry, castles, towers, beautiful villages of Cantabria and Spain, cave paintings, menhirs, pilgrimage routes, and even buildings of different styles like: Roman, Gothic, Baroque and Catalan Modernism!
  • Our traditions: the amazing gastronomy comprised of stews, beef, cheese and fish, sports, traditional festivals, craftsmanship, mythological creatures, livestock fairs, and even the Olympics.

And in just 50 kilometers, you can go from surfing on the Cantabrian Sea to reaching 2000-meter high mountain summits. Aren’t you surprised? But wait, there’s more...

How many times have you dreamed about going back in time? Well, Saja Nansa gives you the chance to do so! Learn about its history, where although you might not be familiar with some of it, it’s still remarkable.
Come create your own memories here...because you don’t know it yet, but you’ll surely come back!
